Funders and Funding
At present, there are a very limited number of truly independent Chinese NGOs working on HIV/AIDS. Due to the difficulty of registering and operating such a group inside mainland China, it is unlikely that this will change very soon. At the same time, there is an increasing amount of interest among international foundations and governments in helping grass-roots NGOs participate in China's response to the epidemic. There is also a growing number of GONGOs, literally "Government Organized NGOs", working in the field. Some are effectively government departments that have put on another hat, some are much more innovative and creative in their approach to working "inside the system."
We are currently working to expand our contacts among small, grass-roots groups and people living with HIV/AIDS, and provide them with whatever assistance or training is possible. In the future, we hope to be able to to introduce such small-scale groups to potential funders, and vice-versa.
